Islam & Freedom

Islam does not restrict freedom, but it is a means of regulating and channelling it in the correct way, such that the freedom of one person does not clash with the freedom of another. This is what occurs when freedom is granted without boundaries, because any person who desires absolute freedom without any boundaries will inevitably fulfil this at the expense of other people’s freedom. As a result of this, discord occurs when people’s freedoms clash, chaos spreads and corruption sets in. It is for this reason that Allaah named the injunctions of the religion “limits” (hudood)…

…Therefore, there is a difference between the restriction of freedom that this group of people assume, and the channelling and regulating of these freedoms that the Most Wise, the Most Acquainted, legislates for His servants.

Patterns of Immoderation from Certain People

The First Pattern:

One pattern of extremism or immoderation takes place at the hands of some fathers and mothers during these times we live in. When young males and females - and all praise is for Allaah - are inclined to follow the Sunnah as much as they are able to, some mothers and fathers set tough restrictions upon them, to the extent that they often forbid their children from performing good deeds, despite the fact that their children are not harmed by doing those good deeds. For example, a parent may say to his children, “Do not perform so many voluntary prayers; do not fast three days each month (the 13th, 14th and 15th of each month),” or “Do not fast Mondays and Thursdays,” or any other similar restrictions. Such acts of worship do not harm one’s parents, not do they prevent one from serving the needs of his parents; furthermore, by performing such deeds, one is not negatively affected in his mind, his body, or his studies. This holds true for both boys and girls.

I am afraid for such parents; afraid that they forbid their children from performing good deeds because they dislike the truth and the Sharee’ah, in which case they are in a dangerous situation. One’s dislike of the truth and of the Sharee’ah might lead one to apostatising, for Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) says:

“That is because they hate that which Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) has sent down (this Qur’aan and Islamic laws, etc.), so He has made their deeds fruitless.” (Qur’aan, 47:9)

And deeds are only made fruitless when one apostatises from Islam. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) says:

“And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever.” (Qur’aan, 2:217)

The Economy

The Qur’aan has laid out the foundations of economics. All aspects of economics fall under these foundations. This is because these aspects all revolve around two basic concepts.

The first: A proper perspective of making money.
The second: A proper perspective in spending it in the right channels.

So, look at how Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) has opened up in His Book (the Qur’aan) ways to making money, in ways appropriate to both honour and religion. He lit the way to that saying:

“So, when the prayer is finished spread out through the earth and seek Allaah’s wealth, and remember Allaah a lot so that you may be successful.” (Al-Jumu’ah: 10)

Lessons from the Manner in Which Prophet Ibrahim (‘alayhi-sallam) Advised his Father

Ibrahim invited his father to Allaah with gentleness and patience. For example, Allaah says:

“And mention in the Book (the Qur’aan) Ibrahim (Abraham). Verily! He was a man of truth, a Prophet. When he said to his father: ‘O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything?’ ‘O my father! Verily! There has come to me of knowledge that which came not unto you. So follow me. I will guide you to a Straight Path.’ ‘O my father! Worship not shaytaan (Satan). Verily! Shaytaan (Satan) has been a rebel against the Most Beneficent (Allaah).’ ‘O my father! Verily! I fear lest a torment from the Most Beneficent (Allaah) overtake you, so that you become a companion of shaytaan (Satan) (in the Hell-fire).’ He (the father) said: ‘Do you reject my gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)? If you stop not (this), I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you.’ Ibrahim (Abraham) said: ‘Peace be on you! I will ask Forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily! He is unto me, Ever Most Gracious.’ ‘And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allaah. And I shall call on my Lord; and I hope that I shall not be unblest in my invocation to my Lord.’ So when he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allaah, We gave him Ishaaque (Isaac) and Ya’qoob (Jacob), and each one of them We made a Prophet. And We gave them of Our Mercy (a good provision in plenty), and We granted them honour on the tongues (of all the nations, i.e. everybody remembers them with a good praise).” (Maryam 19:41:50)

The following are some lessons and notes from the above aayaat:

Commonly Misunderstood Narrations Pertaining to Women

Posted in Family & Social Life, Personal Works by Aboo Uthmaan on March 9th, 2008

Written by Aboo Uthmaan

I recently received an email in my inbox in which the sender asked me what I thought about the contents that they had copied and pasted from an “Islamic” blog that has to its detriment in the last two years received over 130,000 hits. The contents amounted to the author essentially rejecting authentic narrations of the Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) based on nothing more than her emotions in that she was and is unable to believe that the Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said what he did.

Definition & recommendation:

A Kunyah is a combined term consisting of a name preceded by the word Abu (father) or Umm (mother). Depending on its position in a sentence, Abu may appear as Abaa or Abee. Most often, the name used in the kunyah is the bearers eldest child. But, as we will show below, this is not a necessary condition.

Purity & Cleanliness is Half of Eemaan

A very important issue that concerns the Muslims, in every Masjid, in every place, a very important issue that concerns us in this community, a very important issue that many of us consider to be minor, many of us don’t pay attention to, even though the Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) described it as being half of Eemaan. When a man fell short in this regard, in this important issue, the Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) commanded the companions to take him out of the Masjid and throw him in al-Baaqi, the graveyard of al-Madeenah.
